I always get out of my car to either pay or finish pumping the gas. One of the stations near there allows me to pump my own gas because they know me and it speeds up the whole process. Luckily I am very aware of my surroundings and own a car that's not desired by car thieves. Owning an Escalade increases your chances of a car-jacking tremendously because you basically have to stop every 2 blocks to refill the tank.

Insurance fruad then cut the take.

By the way, it is only 2 blocks from St. Lucy's where they have been busting homeless guys for this kind of thing as of late!

Story makes no sense, why was he getting out of his car to pay for the gas?

Also if you are leaving the vehicle, why leave the keys in the ignition!?

Cadillac SUV carjacked near Holland Tunnel

A Brooklyn man had his Cadillac Escalade carjacked from him near the Holland Tunnel in Jersey City early Saturday, according to police reports.

The 35-year-old victim told cops that just as he got out of his SUV to pay for gas at the BP Gas Station at 14th and Erie streets around 6:30 a.m., a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt jumped in the driver?s seat and tried to speed away, reports said.

But the car thief drove into a gas pump and the SUV owner scrambled his way into the back seat of the vehicle, reports said.

The carjacker maneuvered around the pump, forced the owner out of the vehicle, and headed west on 14th Street, reports said.

The victim said that in addition to losing his 2007 Cadillac, $1,950 worth of electronic equipment was also stolen, including a smart phone, a satellite navigation system, and an iPad tablet.
