Hoboken police say bank heist suspect found counting money in back of taxi only a couple of blocks from PNC branch on River Street

Saturday, September 17, 2011, 10:14 AM
By Summer Dawn Hortillosa / The Jersey Journal

A Jersey City man was charged with robbing a PNC Bank in Hoboken Thursday, police said.

At 8:18 a.m., a man police identified as Angelo Viola, 26, walked into the bank at 111 River St. in Hoboken and passed a note to a teller that read, ?I have a gun no one needs to get killed give me money,? reports said.

The teller immediately gave him money from inside her drawer including bait money, five $50 bills set up to trigger an alarm when removed reports said.

Without a bag, Viola wrapped the $1,722 in a rubber band and then filled out a withdrawal slip with a fake name and account number to pretend he was there to make a legitimate bank transaction, reports said.

The teller followed Viola as he left the bank and walked south on River Street before turning on Newark Street, reports said. She then alerted the bank manager and police, giving them a description of the robber, reports said.

An officer found Viola counting a large amount of money in the back of a taxi cab near Newark and Hudson streets in front of another bank, reports said.

The policeman drew his gun and told Viola to freeze, reports said.

The cab driver told police that Viola had asked to be taken to any hotel on Tonnelle Avenue in Jersey City, reports said.
Viola was charged with robbery and making terroristic threats, reports said.
