A Jersey City gas station attendant was beaten and slugged with a baseball bat after arguing with a woman who wanted gas but still owed for her previous purchase, officials said yesterday.
Officers responded to the gas station on Garfield Avenue at 3 p.m. Friday and spoke to the 32-year-old victim, who said the incident began when he told the woman she'd get no gas unless she settled her bill, reports said. After an argument, a woman in the back seat agreed to pay, reports said.
After the transaction, the attendant began walking away and was attacked from behind and punched in the face and body by a man who had been in the front passenger seat, reports said. When the attendant began fighting back, the driver got out and she joined in the attack, reports said.
The car drove away, but the male passenger later walked back with another man and before the attendant could get inside the office the former passenger struck him in the ribs with a baseball bat, reports said. The men began beating the attendant and then ran away, reports said.
The victim was taken to the South District police station, where he gave a statement before being taken for treatment at the Jersey City Medical Center, reports said. Anyone with information on the assault is asked to call the Jersey City police tip line at (201) 547-JAIL.
