Jersey City man wanted in beating, choking of girlfriend until she blacked out, cops say

Thursday, September 08, 2011, 4:22 PM
By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal

Jersey City police are looking for a man charged with choking his girlfriend until she blacked out while beating her and refusing to let her leave their apartment, officials said.

At 1:04 a.m. today the hysterical 36-year-old victim was pounding on the firehouse door on Orient Avenue and when firefighters let her in they saw a man running away, reports said.

When police arrived at the firehouse, the woman, whose face was swollen, said she and her boyfriend were arguing at their nearby home at about 9 p.m. when he began punching her in the face, reports said.

She said he then tried to push her out of the apartment but realizing she was visibly hurt, he then forced her back in and continued the assault, reports said.

She told police that once in the bedroom, the 38-year-old continued beating her and then put his hands around her neck and choked her until she passed out, reports said.

She said when she woke, she ran from the apartment and tried unsuccessfully to flag down a car before her boyfriend dragged her back into the home and choked her until she again fell unconscious, reports said.

The victim said she lost consciousness three or four times during the attack, but at about 1 p.m. her boyfriend left the bedroom to use the bathroom and she bolted from the apartment again, reports said. Outside the home she hid under a parked car until her boyfriend ran past her and she then bolted to the firehouse with her boyfriend in pursuit, reports said.

A judge signed a warrant for his arrest on charges that include aggravated assault and kidnapping, reports said. The boyfriend's name was not released.

The victim told police she did not want a temporary restraining order, reports said.
