Homeless man shot by Newark police behind wheel of SUV reported stolen

By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal

A homeless man was driving a vehicle reported stolen in Jersey City when he was shot by Newark police on Monday after the SUV struck a pedestrian, officials said.

On Sunday, Adrian Facto, 44, was driving on Mt. Prospect Avenue in the red SUV reported stolen on Sunday when he was confronted by police, officials said. The Volkswagen swerved onto the sidewalk where it struck a woman carrying groceries, officials said.

As the vehicle dragged the victim a Newark police officer allegedly fired on Facto and the SUV rolled down an embankment where it struck a tree with the woman still pinned beneath it, officials said.

Facto and the 32-year-old victim, who was not identified, were taken to University Hospital in Newark where she was listed in stable condition and he in critical condition, according to press reports.

The former Wall Township resident is to be charged with receiving stolen property, aggravated assault, resisting arrest and eluding police, officials said.
