I am all about legit and safer ways of transportation like light rail or more frequent buses.
For me, I ride the 10/99s from central to Port Authority daily in the morning. But on those rare occasions when I miss the bus, I can just rush over to shady bus on JFK and make it over to work on time. But I agree, the service is a risk on the road for everyone. It's a catch 22 almost, but I have to say, it's really nice and tempting to use it as a backup service, so you don't have to wait an hour for the next official bus. So guilty as charged :(

They do it a couple of times a year. The most egregious violators are towed away. The rest just get fines.
Local governments are already facing huge deficits. Not sure where the money to expand the light rail would come from. Also, the vans serve NJ to NY commuters every day. In order to replace them, they'd have to build a rail specific tunnel to connect the two states. I'm sure that should be easy enough to pass legislation on and to start building. Oh..

Quite a regular

i lived here for over a year before i realized that these sh!tty buses were not actually run by the city.
those things are a really an easy way for the city to not have to have its own transit system, and as such they are the most decrepit menaces on the road, much like our ghetto taxi's. they do this about once a year (not enough in my opinion) to thin the herd of unlicensed drivers, major equipment failures and a myriad of other things they actually look for during the inspection. now, if only we could get some California emissions regulation as well, so it doesnt seem like i am stuck behind a burning coal barge when they are on the road. heh, i would actually applaud the elimination of them altogether, and get some light rail expansion. screw it, i'll just ride my bike as usual.

Oh no, I rely on those to commute sometimes. I call it the "shady bus". Anyone else have an update on this, I hope they didn't take it all away.

I saw what looked like a crackdown on those Shuttle Buses downtown today. Off Coles Street between JC and Hoboken several JCPD and Sheriffs Cars with a whole bunch of those little buses pulled over with some being towed.
