Registered sex offender, wanted on numerous charges, arrested after being found hiding in closet

A registered sex offender who was one of Hudson County's most wanted fugitives was found hiding in a closet when he was arrested in Jersey City yesterday morning, officials said.

"His record is disturbing," said Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio of Anthony Florence, 46, whose last known address was on Wegman Parkway in Jersey City.

A tip led to Florence's arrest early yesterday on Woodlawn Avenue by officers of the Jersey City Police Department, Hudson County Prosecutor's Office and U.S. Marshals Service, DeFazio said.

Florence was wanted on a number of charges, including aggravated assault and weapons offenses, dating back to an incident in March, DeFazio said, adding that Florence was out on bail at the time of that incident.

Florence was in prison from Jan. 14, 2000 to Sept. 29, 2003 for aggravated assault, resisting arrest, eluding police in a vehicle, contempt and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child/child abuse, state corrections records say.

When the defendant appeared in Central Judicial Processing Court, the judge said two of the warrants for his arrest were for violating the conditions of his Megan's Law supervision.

According to the New Jersey State Police sex offender list, Florence had an "inappropriate relationship with a 13-year-old female," in a case adjudicated in 2000.

The judge said there was also a warrant for Florence's arrest out of Ocean County for owing more than $21,200 in child support. Finally, he was also wanted for absconding from parole, DeFazio said.

Florence told the judge that the Megan's Law issues and child support matter had already been resolved. He was ordered held without bail.
