View Larger Map St. Peter's College in Jersey City taking charge of St. Aedan's Church, one long block away on Bergen Avenue Wednesday, March 23, 2011 By ASHLEY STRAIN JOURNAL STAFF WRITER Spreading its spiritual wings in Jersey City, St. Peter's College has now taken charge of St. Aedan's Roman Catholic Church on Bergen Avenue. Along with new spiritual leaders, St. Aedan's Church will also have a new name - St. Aedan's: The St. Peter's College Church. "This is a whole new dimension for the St. Peter's College and parish community," said Jim Goodness, a spokesman for the Archdiocese of Newark. "It signals a new chapter for them and starting a new chapter is always a good thing." Leaders of the four-year Jesuit college and the Archdiocese announced the news yesterday. The church, located one long block from the Kennedy Boulevard college, will now be the responsibility of the college. The college will lease the church and its property with the intent to buy it over time, officials said, adding that a sales price hasn't been determined. The college will incorporate the church's convent, rectory, parking lot, and a private school being run out of St. Aedan's into its campus. "The news has been very positively received here," said Eugene J. Cornacchia, president of St. Peter's College. "The college has been involved with St. Aedan's for a long time, they were already a part of our community." St. Peter's College and St. Aedan's have coordinated several events together and Cornacchia said there has always been talk of St. Peter's playing a managerial role at the church. The Rev. Vincent Sullivan, the college's rector of the Jesuit community, will lead the church staff, officials said. St. Aedan's currently has around 800 parishioners, according to Goodness, and they will be encouraged to continue to attend church there, officials said. "We look forward to working with our neighbors to continue to keep St. Aedan's a sacred place for worship and reflection for both the Jersey City and the St. Peter's college community," Cornacchia said.
