Winner in Rachael Ray Show's contest will get use of Newport apartment for a year rent-free

The wildly popular Rachael Ray Show is holding a contest for a chance to win one year of rent-free living in a one-bedroom apartment in Downtown Jersey City.

In the contest, three designers take identical Newport apartments and decorate them for three different demographics.


There's the "empty nesters" apartment, a "single parent with child" apartment and an apartment for a "20-something."

The apartments are located at Southampton at Newport, 20 River Court. All are on high floors - between the "mid-20s and the mid-30s," said Andrea Gorlyn, Newport's vice president of marketing. All have water and city views.

But never fear, you don't need to be in one of those groups to enter. Just go to the Rachael Ray Show website, rachelrayshow.com.

If you win, you'll get to choose the apartment. Besides the free rent, which is worth about $30,000 (or $2,500 a month), according Gorlyn, the winner also gets $10,000 and gets to keep the furniture after the year is up.

Total value: $45,000, according to Gorlyn.

Gorlyn said a producer from the Rachael Ray Show, which is seen locally on Channel 7 at 10 a.m., contacted her about the possibility of having three designers decorate three identical apartments.

"I mentioned the possibility of an apartment giveaway, and it took off from there," she said.

This isn't the first time the LeFrak Organization, Newport's development company, has given away a year of free rent.

They've been doing it annually on radio station 103.5, WKTU in Manhattan for years, Gorlyn said. But this is the first time designers have been involved. And the first time there's been free furniture and $10,000 in cash along with it.

"We just thought it was a great idea. We love doing really fun outrageous contests," said Gorlyn.

"This is going to be one of the biggest contests and maybe the biggest contest we have ever done here," Ray said.

You have through Monday to enter. The winner will be chosen in a random drawing.
