Project planned for New York City hinterland

Staff, Windpower Monthly, 01 July 2010, 10:04am

US: A New Jersey peninsula across the Hudson River from New York City could become the home of a 7.5MW wind project by 2014.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey project, planned for an industrial zone on the outskirts of Jersey City, would power a marine terminal with excess power sold into the grid.

"The agency determined that it?s going to look for green-energy resources and this seemed like a natural one," said spokesman Ron Marsico. "Wind studies out on that peninsula showed that it?s a good place for the windmills."

Recently the state?s wind focus has been on offshore development. Last month, the New Jersey legislative committee recently approved a bill that aims to secure 1.1GW of offshore wind generation through a mandate on utilities.

New Jersey was also one of the 10 East Coast states to create the Atlantic Offshore Wind Energy Consortium, a group dedicated to promoting the development of wind energy on the US Outer Continental Shelf (OCS).
