I totally agree, parent involvement makes a big difference. I grew up in private school, and it was the parents that volunteered who really made a big difference and were a big help.

It's hard to find good Catholic schools because they don't have much money, what they do have pretty much goes to just maintaining the schools. and it's hard to have things like fundraisers and stuff to help get money to make the schools better because a lot of times it's difficult to get parent participation to help coordinate these events. It's a catch 22 sometimes because all the parents want to put their kids in the best Catholic schools but they don't want to help make them the best.

I went to visit some school. The one I liked the best was the Resurrection school in downtown, not only academically but socially and spiritually.

I went to St. Joseph on Pavonia Ave. in Jersey City all through school (except one year I wanted to try public school which I didn't enjoy so I returned to St. Joe's in 7th grade). I still help out at the school and I"m part of the alumni committee. It's a great atmosphere and the people there become like your family. I'm still close with my Kindergarten and 8th grade teachers (which are still at the school, except my former 8th grade teacher is now the principal) I love it there and hope to send my kids there one day.

Beg to differ. I know what my daughter in grade two is learining, and it's equal to the other schools in JC and Hoboken which charge double the tuition. I'm a certified elementary school teacher, and I couldn't be happier with the methods, curriculum and staff at OLC. My kids are doing exceptionally well and score in the top percentiles on the standardized tests. OLC must be doing something right.

Linky - my daughter is at 1st grade and tuition was not raised because of the assistant.... Unfortunately for my family.... My daughters grade has been the one carrying the new price from LHA to OLC....

As the previous principal put it... lHA supports the Olc school .... Tuition did go up but thank fully only 200 this year...

We started in pk 3 at 6000
Pk4 6500
K 7750
1st grade 8000
And for 2 nd grade will be 8200

And as for the assistant, we don't have full time...she's more like a floter...right now she's helping the teacher in upper grades that was operated on his leg I believe....

The school is just ok and does not justify the price.... Don't be fooled by waiting list in thinking it's a good school...it's more because the options are limited

So i have an appointment to go visit St. Anne's and the Resurrection School. I know people who came from st. Mary's elementary (now the Resurrection School), and I actually went to St. Mary's HS with one of the teachers there. So we'll see. I like OLC but from what i hear they're a little out of my price range, and let's not forget the waiting list, which really does me no good since this is for September. She's 4 btw, so t his is for Pre-K 4. Hoboken catholic is another choice, my only peeve is going down to hoboken from the heights is traffic city lol.

Perhaps children already attending are grandfathered into old tuition. I just looked at their paperwork, and tuition is listed as $895 for grades 1-3, and $595 for grades 4-8.

While it's not in J.C. another option is Hoboken Catholic. My children go there and I am really happy with it. I live downtown and can either drive there or take the light rail. There are many Jersey City kids who attend the school.

Can anyone share feedback on the Resurrection School. I don't know a single neighborhood child that attends the school?

My oldest daughter is going into grade 3 there, and they have not raised her tuition. Starting last year, they raised the tuition for grade 1 because there is a full-time aide in there.

My daughter attended Resurrection School for a few months in pre-k 4. Sr. Barbara is very nice, and the staff is caring. However, they try to keep the tuition down, sothey don't offer as much as OLC. The academics are not as strong either. but the school doesn't offer as much as OLC.

OLC does have a waiting list, but not necessarily for all the grades. They have two kindergartens now, so there may be openings. It is best to move fast, and talk to them about what is available. If you visit the school and like it, it's good to put yourself on the waiting list. Jersey City is a pretty transient place for families, and spaces open up frequently. This applies for most schools in JC that have waiting lists.

Check out the OLC website. I don't know the address, but just keyword OLC school Jersey City. Looking at the teacher web link will give you some idea of what goes on in each class. Also, visit the curriculum fair on May 25. You'll get a feel for what the kids have been doing in each grade.

Definitely check out OLC school ( Our Lady of Czechohowa) on Marin Boulevard near Grand St.

My two daughters go there, and we are very pleased. It's probably the best Catholic grammar school in the city.

I'm looking into catholic schools for my child (not too far). Does anyone have any experiences/recommendations? THe two that I'm looking at in particular are St. Annes in the heights and The Resurrection schools in downtown.
