How about giving them to the local jails for men that are incarcerated and are about to be set free. This way society can greet them with a whole new outlook and not realize where they came from. Hopefully the suits will have a tailored and tapered look as opposed to the usual baggy flair that seems to be the fashion norm in Sing Sing.

A New Home for Your Old Suits

Fashion reporter Teri Agins answers readers' questions

By TERI AGINS

Q: My husband is retiring at the end of the year and wants know where to give away gently used suits. These are nice, designer suits and he wants to make sure someone deserving gets some good use out of them.
?M.K., Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.

A: Take a look at special charities such as Career Gear, a nonprofit organization specializing in providing clothing for men who are actively seeking employment. Founded in 1996, Career Gear furnishes unemployed men with suits, dress shirts, ties and shoes and overcoats. It also provides them with career counseling to help them seek and retain jobs.

Donated clothes are accepted at Career Gear's nine offices in New York, Chicago, San Antonio, Jersey City, N.J., San Francisco, Houston, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Dallas and Miami. Career Gear also receives new clothing donated by companies such as Brooks Brothers, Men's Wearhouse, and Kenneth Cole.

Among the charities that serve women are the Women's Alliance and Dress for Success, nonprofits that provide interview suits and other office-worthy attire, as well as career counseling, to low-income women.

Finally, don't overlook the possibility of donating used clothing to your alma mater. Some colleges circulate clothing donated by alumni to current students.
