A 43-year-old Staten Island man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the front steps of the home of his estranged wife in Jersey City near Country Village yesterday morning as police responded to the location, officials said.
At 1:31 a.m., police got a call reporting a woman being harassed on Msgr. Wojtycha Drive. As they responded they got a second call saying the man was now inside a parked Lexus, reports said.
When the officers arrived they found the Lexus empty but saw a man sitting with his back against the front door of the residence, reports said. A closer look revealed he had a bullet wound to his forehead and there was a handgun in his lap, reports said, adding that he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The wife told police she and the man were separated and she was staying with relatives there, reports said.
She said she had been on her way to bed when the door bell began ringing continuously and she called police after looking out the window and seeing the Staten Island man's car, reports said.
The wife said she called police again after the door bell stopped ringing and a gunshot rang out, reports said.
