Police: Two Jersey City teens, with a loaded handgun, arrested after carjacking

By Tom Shortell
February 22, 2010, 6:40PM

Jersey City police arrested two alleged teen carjackers after spotting a stolen Honda Accord being driven through McGinley Square Friday night

Officers noticed the car, reported stolen at gunpoint the night before, heading east on Montgomery Street at 11:58 p.m.

The officers followed the car and additional units converged on the Honda after the driver stopped on Fremont Street, police said.

The Accord's 17-year-old driver tried to speed off, but was unable to move the car, police said. The 16-year-old passenger refused to comply with orders to show his hands and officers saw a handgun on the passenger floor board, police said.

After the 16-year-old refused to open his door, one officer broke the car window to gain entry to the vehicle, reports said. Both teenagers were then arrested.

Police said the .45-caliber handgun on the car floor was loaded.

The car had been stolen the night before from a 20-year-old man on Ege Avenue, police said.

The 16-year-old, of Ocean Avenue, and 17-year-old, of Garfield Avenue, were charged with carjacking, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, receiving stolen property and possession of a firearm by a minor, police said.
