While out on a Thanksgiving Day walk my husband and I witnessed the rescuers trying in vain to save the man's life. It happened on the part of 78/NJ turnpike just after the road comes around the curve and is headed straight for the Holland Tunnel.

It is such a tragedy. Our hearts go out to the young man and his family.

Sad story -- I'm not sure if this happened around 14B or between 14C and the Holland Tunnel (above downtown) -- the Journal is not clear...

JERSEY CITY -- A 29-year-old Jersey City man died this afternoon after jumping 60 feet from a bridge in the city, according to State Police.

Nelson Liu and his father were driving eastbound on Route 78 toward Liu's home, said State Police Det. Brian Polite, when their vehicle stopped in traffic on a bridge near mile marker 7.9 shortly before 2:30 p.m.

Liu, who was riding in the front passenger seat, opened the door and walked to the edge of the bridge. Then, for "reasons still under investigation," Polite said, he jumped.

The man was pronounced dead at Jersey City Medical Center, Polite said. An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow.
