CITIZENS LAUNCH A JERSEY CITY CALL TO SERVICE

Free one-hour Leadership Forum

Jersey City, N.J. ? City residents are launching a Call to Service in Jersey City, to increase citizen participation in community and City service opportunities. This effort is part a broad New Jersey Call to Service led by the Citizens? Campaign, the Metuchen-based non-profit led by Harry Pozycki. Over the course of the next few months local residents and Citizens? Campaign members will work with elected officials and community organizations to increase citizen service to meet the challenges facing the town.


The Call to Service will start with a free one-hour leadership forum on Wednesday, February 4th, at 7 pm at Frank R. Conwell Middle School #4, at 107 Bright Street to teach residents about constructive participation in local government. This forum is co-hosted by Civic JC, and co-sponsored by Boys & Girls Club of Jersey City, New Jersey City University, Women Rising, and Hamilton Park Neighborhood Association. This is the first of several free leadership forums to prepare citizens for service in Jersey City.

The Citizens? Campaign?s Call to Service focuses on four identified Paths to Service, they are: 1) Serving on an appointed local board or commission; 2) Serving as a neighborhood-level party committeeperson; 3) Becoming a citizen legislator by devising a constructive common-interest proposal and presenting it to a relevant government body; and 4) Serving in the increasingly important area of emergency response, such as the first aid squad or auxiliary police.

The Call to Service also includes the adoption of a Citizen Service Act to create an open process for gaining appointment to municipal boards and commissions; establishing a Citizen Service Day to honor the town?s exemplary volunteers; and additional leadership forums to bolster citizen service in the community.
