Chuck at home in Staten Island. NEW YORK (WABC) -- Staten Island Chuck did not see his shadow, predicting an early spring and putting him at direct odds with Pennsylvania's Punxsutawney Phil. The 10-pound Chuck has accurately predicted the seasonal shifts 21 times over the last 28 years. Chuck has been predicting the weather on Staten Island since 1981. Meanwhile, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, predicting six more weeks of winter. German tradition holds that if a hibernating animal cast a shadow on Feb. 2 - the Christian holiday of Candlemas - winter would last another six weeks. If no shadow was seen, legend said spring would come early. Since 1887, Phil has seen his shadow 97 times, hasn't seen it 15 times, and there are no records for nine years, according to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club.
