Charge: He murdered in a felony

Tuesday, November 18, 2008

A Jersey City man in jail on a robbery charge faced felony murder charges yesterday after the Regional Medical Examiner's Office concluded the force he used during the robbery led to the victim's death.

Bail for Angelo Williams, 27, aka "H," of Armstrong Avenue, was set yesterday at $200,000 cash for the murder charge by Hudson County Superior Court Judge Kevin Callahan.

This bail is in addition to the existing bail of $100,000 cash for charges of first-degree robbery, officials said.

The victim, Andre Scott, 49, of Armstrong Avenue, died at Jersey City Medical Center, two days after suffering head trauma, a fractured nose and other injuries when he was beaten by two attackers on Armstrong Avenue near Martin Luther King Drive on July 16, officials said.

A 14-year-old boy who was identified by witnesses as one of Scott's attackers was charged with robbery in August, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said. At the time, witnesses knew Williams only by his Street name, "H," DeFazio said.

Homicide detectives arrested Williams on Sept. 17 at work on Enterprise Avenue in Secaucus and charged him with robbery pending the results of the autopsy, officials said.

The charges against Williams were upgraded to felony murder when autopsy results received last month showed Scott died of multiple blunt force trauma, DeFazio said.

The robbery charge against the 14-year-old - who was released to his parents - is pending and will not be upgraded to felony murder, officials said.
