After several hours, the Coast Guard located the surviving victim and was able to call off the search.

Balloons mistaken for parachutist in Jersey City
by The Star-Ledger Continuous New Desk Friday February 01, 2008, 12:15 PM A bunch of balloons sent rescue workers from New York and New Jersey hustling to the shores of Jersey City today after someone mistook the inflatables for a parachutist, officials said. "They were just regular balloons," a U.S. Coast Guard officer said. The balloons were first spotted over the Hudson River and were erroneously reported around 11 a.m. as a parachutist landing near the Colgate Clock. The reports drew officers from the Jersey City Police Department, Jersey City Fire Department, New York City Police Department Harbor Unit and the U.S. Coast Guard, officials said. ============== No one jumped from building by Journal staff Friday February 01, 2008, 12:32 PM As it turns out no one jumped this morning from the Goldman Sachs building or any other tall building along ther Jersey City waterfront, the New York Police Department has now determined. A massive search, involving the Coast Guard, was triggered this morning when the NYPD received a call around 10:36 a.m.about an alleged parachutist. The Jersey City Fire Department terminated their participation in the search around 11:30 when they didn't find anyone.

Big response in search for parachutist
By The Jersey Journal Friday February 01, 2008, 11:23 AM Reporter Michaelangelo Conte reports a big response at Exchange Place as rescuers search for a reported downed parachutist in the waters. Emergency services unit truck, police cars and fire trucks are parked at the end of the street along Exchange Place as a Jersey City fire boat and a U.S. Coast Guard cutter scour the river in driving rain near the ferry terminal. ...hmmmmmmmm.....
