Doing arson probe for blaze at Daily News

Saturday, January 12, 2008
By MICHAELANGELO CONTE
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

Investigators have ruled the two-alarm fire at the Daily News printing plant in Jersey City last weekend to be suspicious, Fire Director Armando Roman said yesterday.

The Jersey City Fire Department Arson Unit is investigating and conducting interviews as part of its the probe into the Jan. 5 blaze at the building, on Theodore Conrad Drive near Liberty State Park. Roman said no additional information is being released at this time.

Firefighters responded to the fire around 1:30 a.m. and a second alarm was called 12 minutes later to bring more firefighters and equipment to combat the stubborn fire, which was fueled by burning oil-based ink, Roman said.

The flames were under control by 2:12 a.m. but not before a portion of the building suffered heavy damage, Roman said.

A Daily News spokeswoman said the blaze disrupted part of the newspaper's production but everything was back to normal the next day.

Fire Damages Daily News Printing Facility in Jersey City

Saturday, 05 January

JERSEY CITY, NJ (1010 WINS) -- Firefighters this morning battled a blaze at a Daily News printing facility and warehouse in Jersey City.

The city's director of fire and emergency services, Armando Roman, said the blaze broke out in an area containing printing presses.

He said that portion of the building sustained heavy damage.

One worker was taken to the hospital, but Roman did not have any information on his injuries or condition.

A spokeswoman for the newspaper, Jennifer Mauer, in a statement said the blaze disrupted part of the newspaper's Saturday production but said the Sunday print run was expected to be normal.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Fire temporarily stops Daily News printing presses

Saturday, January 5th 2008, 6:07 PM

The Daily News unfortunately made the news Saturday when a fire broke out at our Jersey City press facility, disrupting delivery of New York's favorite newspaper to some of our customers.

The fire, in a part of one press, has not affected Sunday's production, and the printing of the Daily News is back to normal.

"We apologize to our loyal family of readers for yesterday's problems," said Marc Z. Kramer, Daily News chief executive officer. "It is always a shame when you can't read the best in New York coverage.

"But we have worked hard to ensure that the city's best newspaper will be delivered as usual Sunday to your home or local newsstand."
