I don't know about the playground. Apparently the dog run in Newport is a pay-to-use facility.

Most of the "parks" -- and I use the term loosely since most of the parks in newport are nothing more than a patch of grass and a bench-- are without gates or fences, which is essentially an open invitation to the public.

Also, municipal parking zones / permit signs on Newport Parkway to me indicate that the streets in Newport are actually 100% public access-- that is, the sidewalks along the parkway and river drive are like any other public street. The sidewalks are owned by a private property owner but with mandatory public access. Which, as far as the restrictions on photography or electioneering, such as handing out political flyers, Newport really has no way of restricting such activity other than through the municipal code.

But the playground has a fence, as does the dog run, so essentially this is private, much like the courtyard / park across from the duane reade-- gate = private, no gate = public invitation. This nuance is lost on rent-a-cops who probably are lucky if they have a HS diploma.

So the short answer is, yes, the newport playgrounds probably are considered private, which really leads to only one question, which is why would you want to hang out in downtown newport anyway?

The lighthouse does have a light facing east but it is not a legal navigational aid. Sam Lefrak just wanted the structure to go with his boat that he kept at the adjacent marina. It is useful as a landmark in finding the marina by boat at night (the marina itself is not well lit).

You'll see it featured on page 27 of Randall Gabrielan's new book, "Jersey City, A monumental History," Schiffer Publishing, 2007. Yes, it's easy to access, right along the waterfront walkway at Pavonia Avenue aka Town Square Place in Newport. The book is in the Jersey City Museum's gift shop.

The tricky thing there is Newport is a "private" development, but the streets and and waterfront walkway are public. However, the rent-a-cops don't understand the difference between public and private and will tell you photography is prohibited.

The lighthouse is decorative only, nothing inside of it.

I noticed an attractive lighthouse on the waterfront not far from the Newport Mall. I am interested in lighthouses so I am curious. When was it built? Is it a real lighthouse or just decorative? I found 2 different names for it: Lefrak Point Lighthouse as well as Liberty Point Lighthouse. Which is the correct name? I will try to take photos next week so I need to know if it is open to the public. The lighthouse near where I live at Coney Island is completely off-limits to visitors as Seagate is a gated community.
