Plate leads cops to stolen cars, weapons
Saturday, March 31, 2007 By CHARLES HACK JOURNAL STAFF WRITER
A Hoboken resident who spotted his license plate on a different car led cops to a man with two stolen cars, two guns and a stun gun, reports said.
Robert Isaac, 33, of Bergen Avenue in Jersey City, was arrested Tuesday and charged with three counts of unlawful possession of a weapon, two counts of receiving stolen property, possession of prohibited weapons and devices and resisting arrest, reports said.
Cops were led to Isaac by a sharp-eyed Hoboken Housing Authority resident who spotted his recently stolen license plate on a red Ford Taurus parked on Harrison Street, reports said. By the time police arrived, the driver had parked it and was walking down the block, but the resident pointed him out to police.
Isaac - who police said was 6 feet tall and weighed 350 pounds - told cops the resident must have had him confused with someone else, because he wasn't driving the Taurus.
Police officers confirmed the license plate had been reported stolen from another car, and that the Taurus also had been stolen.
Officers then searched the car and found a .38 revolver in the glove box, police said.
Meanwhile, as he was being questioned, Isaac tried to throw something into a garbage can, cops say, and when officers retrieved it they found it was the key to the Taurus.
Isaac then scuffled with officers and it took six cops to subdue him, reports said.
In the trunk of the Taurus, police said they found a stun gun and police-style "flex-cuff" restraints.
The resident then tipped cops off to a Ford Crown Victoria - parked in a nearby lot - that he said had been used in drug deals. Cops found a .22 handgun in the trunk of that car, which also had been reported stolen. Isaac had the key to that car as well, reports said.
Police had also received a tip from another Hoboken Housing Authority resident who handed police a piece of paper giving two plate numbers belonging to stolen cars used in drug deals, reports said. Police traced one plate back to a Ford Crown Victoria in a nearby parking lot with a .22 handgun in the trunk, police said. Isaac also had keys that fit that vehicle, authorities said. The other plate was on the Taurus.
