Jersey City police hope for another problem-free Mischief Night, ask merchants' cooperation in not selling eggs, shaving cream, any kind of powder to minors

Wednesday, October 27, 2010

It could be the night that homeowners across the county get the least amount of sleep. Groggy and dull-eyed, they awake the next morning holding their collective breath as they scan their home and property for any signs of the previous night.

The Jersey City Police Department is hoping to put property owners at ease by urging business owners to avoid selling eggs, shaving cream and any form of powder to minors on Saturday, Mischief Night.

There will be extra police patrols on duty Saturday and the city will also be enforcing the 10 p.m. curfew for anyone under 18, Lt. Edgar Martinez said yesterday.

"We want the merchants and parents to be vigilant on Mischief Night," Martinez said. "The curfew will be enforced and summonses will be issued."

Martinez said there are relatively few problems on Mischief Night, traditionally the night before Halloween. He attributed that to the Police Department's aggressive approach, as well as cooperation from store owners in the city.
