A Jersey City man was clinging to life yesterday after being shot in the buttocks during a robbery in Curries Woods late Thursday night, officials said.

When police responded to Liggons Lane at 11:46 p.m. they found the 23-year-old Walter Mays Drive resident face-down in front of a doorway and with a gunshot wound in his left buttock, reports said.

He told police he was in the area to visit a family member when three men got out of a two-door, silver car and approached him, reports said, adding that the men stole his gold necklace and then shot him after a struggle.

The woman who dialed 911 said her door bell began ringing repeatedly and when she opened the door she found the victim on the ground and screaming "I'm shot," reports said.

The victim was rushed to the Jersey City Medical Center and when police checked on him at 1 a.m. yesterday, doctors said he was in "life-threatening condition" and undergoing a CAT scan, reports said. An update on his condition was not available.

Police recovered one spent shell, the necklace, and a "du-rag" that may have belonged to one of the robbers at the scene of the shooting on Heckman Drive, reports said.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Jersey City police tip line at (201) 547-JAIL.
