Jersey City man accused of belonging to Elizabeth drug ring

By Julie O'Connor/The Star-Ledger
January 18, 2010, 7:40PM

ELIZABETH -- Authorities have arrested a man they say belonged to the same Elizabeth drug ring as Luqman Abdullah, a wanted felon who is the suspected kingpin of the city?s cocaine trade.

Lamont Harris, 35, of Jersey City was taken into custody at about 11 a.m. Thursday, after leading six sheriff?s officers on a chase up and down several fire escapes, authorities said. This was one of a series of arrests resulting from an investigation into Abdullah?s drug ring, dubbed Operation Red Zone.

Harris was charged with conspiracy to distribute drugs and racketeering, and his bail was set at $1 million.

He is believed to have been an associate of 27-year-old Abdullah, an alleged Bloods gang member who has been at large since April 2009. Authorities believe Abdullah led a violent drug ring that flooded Essex and Union counties with about $700,000 worth of cocaine each week.

Officers found Harris at his girlfriend?s apartment on John F. Kennedy Boulevard in Jersey City. He jumped out a window and led them on a chase up the fire escape of a five-story building and onto the rooftop. Harris then leapt onto an adjacent building, bolted down another fire escape and into a locked alley. He entered the building and was arrested in a fourth-floor hallway, said Jim Lowney, a spokesperson for the Sheriff?s Office.
