Jersey City murder suspect, now 17, is identified as manhunt is pressed; trial as adult is likely

A Jersey City boy who was only 16 when a man was gunned down leaving a Greenville house party in December has been charged with murder and related offenses, officials said yesterday.

"We believe that Anthony Alvarado Jr. could be a danger to the public and himself," Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said of the now 17-year-old Long Street boy charged in the Dec. 19 killing of Alterik Perry on Corcoran Street.

"He is making efforts to avoid apprehension and therefore we have taken this exceptional measure to release his identity and photograph," DeFazio said regarding the release of the identity of a minor who is currently charged as a juvenile but will likely be tried as an adult.

Alvarado is aware he has been charged with the murder of Alterik Perry, who was struck in the back of the head by a single bullet at about 1 a.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene, DeFazio said.

The motive for the shooting may have been gang rivalry, DeFazio said, adding that Perry was not robbed.

The gunfire that erupted as people left the house party also struck a 31-year-old man who suffered a serious gunshot wound to his leg and was taken to the Jersey City Medical Center for treatment, DeFazio said at the time. Alvarado is not charged in the shooting of the 31-year-old.

Investigators believe others were present with Alvarado during the shooting but they allege it was Alvarado who fired the fatal round that struck Perry.

Once in custody, Alvarado will go before a family court judge and prosecutors will then begin the process of moving the charges against him to Hudson County Superior Court Criminal Division, where he will be prosecuted as an adult, DeFazio said.

In family court the maximum penalty for murder is 20 years, while in criminal court the penalty is 30 years to life.

The prosecutor said the work of homicide detectives looking into Perry's murder has been ongoing since the morning of the killing. He would not say what specific evidence led to the boy.

The warrant for the arrest of Alvarado, aka "Greedo" and "Mayo," on the charges of murder and weapons offenses was signed April 21 by Hudson County Superior Court Family Part Judge Camille M. Kenny.

The bullet was recovered from Perry's head during an autopsy at the state Regional Medical Examiner's Office in Newark, DeFazio said, adding that the murder weapon has not been recovered.

Detectives think Alvarado may still be in the Jersey City area. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office's Homicide Squad at (201) 915-1345

19-year-old killed in JC shootout

HudsonReporter

JERSEY CITY -- Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said on Monday that Altarik Perry, 19, of Bergen Avenue in Jersey City, was shot to death Saturday morning during a wild shooting near Woodlawn Avenue.

DeFazio said Perry had just left a party at a nearby home with a group of people around 1 a.m. when two men allegedly started firing approximately 20 shots at the victims.

DeFazio said a bullet struck Perry in the back of the head and he was killed immediately. DeFazio also said a 31-year-old man was suffered a serious leg injury after being shot. The man is currently being treated at the Jersey City Medical Center.

DeFazio said one bullet went through the living room of one nearby residence, almost hitting the person residing there.

"It was an extremely dangerous situation for innocent bystanders," DeFazio said.

DeFazio said 19 spent shell casings were traced to two semi-automatic pistols. He said the incident was clearly not a robbery and no motive has been established.

Anyone with information about the shooting can call the Hudson County Prosecutor's Homicide Squad at (201) 915-1345. - RK

Jersey City man shot dead after leaving house party, officials say

By Ken Thorbourne/The Jersey Journal
December 20, 2009, 12:33PM

In what authorities are describing as a wild shoot-out, a 19-year-old Jersey City man was shot and killed on Corcoran Street, near Woodlawn Avenue, early Saturday morning, and a 31-year-old man was sent to the hospital with serious injuries.

"Roughly 20 shots were fired," Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said this morning. "Casings were recovered from at least two semi-automatic handguns.

"Four parked cars were hit by bullets. Two houses were hit by bullets, including one where a woman was almost struck. It was an extremely dangerous situation," DeFazio added.

DeFazio identified the dead man as Alterik Perry, 19, of Bergen Avenue in Jersey City, noting Perry was shot at least once in the face.

The 31-year-old victim was taken the Jersey City Medical Center by friends.

The shooting started at about 1 a.m. as several people came out of a house party. After the shooting started, several people fled the scene either on foot or in vehicles, DeFazio said.

"We don't have a motive established. It was not robbery," he said.

No firearms were recovered at the scene.

Anyone with information about this shooting is asked to contact the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office's Homicide Unit at (201) 915-1345.
