I have known the family for years. They sold Lou's to my aunt and uncle, and I worked for them part time at the Colonette, the diner on 440. That place put me through college when tuition was still seasonable.

I'm a fan of the Miss America Diner. They have odd hours, but the food is solid.

JERSEY CITY ? The kitchen doors flew open and waitresses rushed in and out with plates of burgers and fries balanced on each hand.

The parking lot out front was full as hungry patrons poured inside. The clattering of forks on plates echoed, as the Miss America Diner in Jersey City was brimming with voices on Thursday afternoon.

The West Side Avenue diner, located near New Jersey City University, will celebrate its 75th anniversary this spring and remains as vibrant as ever.

"It's the best diner around," said Rosemary Carrano, who has been coming to the diner for the last seven years, and sometimes three times a day. "There's nothing as good as this."

Miss America's current owner, Tony Margetis, has been running the eatery for the last 10 months with his two sons, George and John, but has been in the diner business since 1970 when his family bought their first diner, Lou's Restaurant on Ocean Avenue.
