Nah, at some point in the past the owners decided to rip the original front of the building off and replace it with that blunt stucco facing. The building lost its historical integrity a long time ago, like most old things around here.

I feel stupid now. I've spent the first 23 years of my life regularily walking pretty much every day in front of that building, and I knew it was old, but not that old.
.. am I a prime example of the "ignorant American" all Europeans are laughing about?

The historic Summit House, at 510 Summit Ave. in Journal Square, is on the market for sale or lease, Chuck Lanyard of The Goldstein Group, who listed the property, confirmed. The three-story building, on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places, was constructed in 1690 by the Newkirk family and is considered the oldest building in the city. It is also among the 20 oldest structures in the state.
