Just paid my first property tax but I forgot that the property tax here in JC is paid in advance or arrears? Does somebody know?

Thanks.

Property taxes in NJ are due on the 1st day of the 2nd month of the quarter. Taxes are due 2/1, 5/1, 8/1, 11/1. When you pay taxes on 11/1 they are for October, November and December

It is 100% paying in advance. I just spoke to them about it last week.

Good question. I'm pretty sure the payment is for the upcoming three months. The last time I bought a home, the closing took place in mid-August. The seller had already paid the Aug. 1 property tax, and I recall that part of the check I had to bring to the closing covered the pro-rated property tax for 2.5 months. Give the tax collector's office at City Hall a call to be sure: 201-547-5125.

I have a question about the timing of quarterly taxes. Taxes due on November 1, are they for the period of November, December, January, or for the period of August, September, October? I've got an agreement to pay taxes on a space but I want to be sure I'm not paying taxes for time I wasn't around.
