I've lived a few blocks away, off of Magnolia for about a year now. I really like the neighborhood (very friendly), and the amount of space you get for your $ up here (I used to live downtown). Hope you find your peace 'n quiet on the hilltop!

Why does Jersey City allow kids to leave at lunch time? Can that be stopped?

I grew up there and my mother still lives in the area. It's convenient to PATH and the people are generally cordial. The Hilltop Neighborhood Association is VERY active and enjoys considerable influence in town.

It can be a bit scary walking back from the PATH along Magnolia Avenue late at night. My brother was assaulted and robbed on Chestnut and Magnolia walking to my mother's house last year, but unfortunately random crime is a fact of life in the city.

All in all, it is a good neighborhood.

I worked at a school in that neighborhood for several years. It's nice, and is accessible to PATH, downtown, Newark Ave. The only drawback is that the Mob of Dickinson High School students are a pain at lunchtime and dismissal. You don't want to be walking around then, as they are very badly behaved, and leave trash and litter around.

Otherwise, I would definitely rent or buy there. It's a nice little neighborhood.

We have a property for rent there and we have never had our tenants report a problem related to the area.

My husband and I are considering renting an apartment on Chestnut St. btwn Pavonia and Newark. We currently live downtown on Grove st, but are thinking about making the move to have more space and quiet for us and our one year old daughter. Does anyone have any info on safety, noise, thoughts on the neighborhood up there? Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
