Appearing during the day is not a sign of rabies. Down in Florida there are raccoons all over the place and they are always approaching people because too many people hand feed them. If the critter is staggering around that may be a symptom but his behavior doesn't sound like rabies.

@ThirdRail I have tried cayenne pepper spray, repellant, granulated coyote piss and a motion sensored sprinkler. Once they realize there are no coyotes it stops working. They also figured out they can just go behind the sprinkler.
They come out while I'm in my yard and usually I spray them with a hose if I see them....they still come back.

If it has been going in your trash cans try filling the cans with balloons. It might scare them off after they pop in its face. You can try it also anywhere you think its hiding to scare it off for good.

That's absurd. So, if there is a rabid raccoon (which is a public health issue) in Septemer they would deal with it but not in May.

I just called a private company and I received a quote for $425. That too is absurd.

the part about coming out during the day is really troublesome. racoons only do that if they're sick.

JC Animal Control is useless.

good luck!

Unless they changed their poilcy, they will remove raccoons just not this time of the year. Apparently it is mating season and it is illegal to trap them until August. I was told last year that even if one is in your house they will only catch and release it right there. Obviously letting them produce more offspring will help alleviate the problem.
They have provided me with traps in the past and come to pick them up. I have caught two raccoons and one possum. I still have 3 raccoons that I know of and at least one possum that like to tear up my grass in the heights.
Unfortunately you will have to call a private company if you want to get rid of them. I have tried everything imaginable to keep them out of my yard and nothing works.

Good grief, they SHOULD handle raccoons and possums. Your raccoon seems to have rabies, so DON'T allow your child outside. I don't have a recommendation for a contractor, but if you search for pest control companies, most of them do handle furry animals (not only creepy crawlers).

There has been a large raccoon in my backyard (downtown by VVP) that has been coming out during the day and has been pretty fearless. I've tried to scare him away several times by waving a broom but barely budges. I have a 3 yr old child that likes to play in the yard but now I'm afraid that the raccoon can be dangerous .

I called JC Animal Control and they told me that they don't handle removal of raccoons. I was really suprised. What the hell do they control then - cats and dogs? I asked what if it was rabid and she ignored my question. They suggested for me to hire a private company. Does anyone have any recommnedations?
