I think that alot of those stores are egyptian and Harissa is moroccan. I get it from Citarella's at 9th Street and Sixth (right next to the Path). :)

You'll have a difficult time finding this downtown. The best place is Little India (Newark Ave, Journal Square).

I stopped in 3 or 4 middle eastern/halal groceries around the Grove St area and no no one had harissa paste for sale. I plan on getting some dried chilis and making my own but also wanted some of the paste that comes in a tube or can. Can anyone suggest a storefront where I can buy the paste?
