DanL and all,

What is a practical way to get the idea floating among the shakers in this city? Can Fulop (the only person I know of in city gov't that would even grasp the importance of these kinds of ideas and have the integrity to do them more than lip service) be engaged in some way to present a proposal along these lines to the Council?

It's quite embarrassing to have Bike Route signs everywhere and it's barely safe to cross the streets on foot. It makes me think there is a huge uphill battle ahead to promote a serious agenda like the Sustainable Streets plan when I see a silly use of resources like these signs without actual lanes.

I want to hear what people think is a practical way to approach implementing a plan like this in JC.

NYC just released their Strategic Plan for the NYC DOT 2008 and beyond titled - "Sustainable Streets"

while Jersey City has no striped bicycle lanes in the city's Bicycle Master Plan (but plenty of signs), NYC has released this impressive plan - Sustainable Streets

initiatives include -

- commitment to double the number of bike commuters by 2015 and triple the number by 2020

- making Central and Prospect Parks increasingly car-free

- plans for pedestrian-priority projects around the city,

- halve the number of pedestrian fatalities by 2030

- implement bus priority measures and bus rapid transit

- improve parking management policies

- develop Complete streets design templates

- make city streets sustainable and attractive

- communicate the need for safer streets through bike and pedestrian ad campaigns

- community education and outreach

these are bold and proactive initiatives and while NYC obiviously has exponential resources of JC, there is no good reason that our city cannot incorporate many of these ideas in planning for our future. we should be insisting on it. city elections are only a year away... will we hear this type of leadership from any candidates....
