Massacres on our mind this Valentine's Day

Jersey Journal -- Feb 14 -- Political Insider

... As for the 31st District and the HCDO candidates, it seems that Bayonne Mayor and Sen. Joseph Doria will have all new running mates. Assembly incumbents Lou Manzo and Charles Epps, superintendent of schools in Jersey City, are being jettisoned - at Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy's insistence. And it appears Cupid is aiming his arrow at county Freeholder Jeff Dublin and county Sheriff Joseph Cassidy as Doria's Assembly mates.

This leaves a possible return of an original team, a Cunningham as a Senate candidate with incumbent Manzo and former Assemblyman and Bayonne Councilman Anthony Chiappone as the Doria team's opposition. The possible only fly in this ointment is whether Bolden Cunningham likes this arrangement (Manzo), or if Manzo wants to try it on his own - off the line.

L. Harvey Smith may not be out of the running for a spot on a ticket. Should Cassidy run for Assembly, then he could be on a Stack slate challenging Healy's pick, Jersey City Deputy Police Director Juan Manuel Perez.

Then again, let's flip-flop all this since nothing is yet set in stone. What if it is Smith who winds up with Cunningham and Chiappone while Manzo tries to put on the sheriff's badge? These are all credible possibilities.

Either way, Doria is probably in the biggest fight of his political career. And who would have thought a crucial act of this entire play would occur this evening when the City Council will vote on the municipal budget and a bonding ordinance. Chiappone and Councilman Gary La Pelusa are expected to recreate the St. Valentine's Day Massacre and shoot down Doria's budget. Then, city officials will have to negotiate a new budget.

Hudson's politicians should remember today that when they express their true feelings, they should say it with flowers. ...
