Grant to aid JCHA residents with ed, jobs

Tuesday, April 21, 2009

The Jersey City Housing Authority has been awarded $720,000 by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to help public housing residents with education, job training, employment services and homeownership counseling.

The JCHA was one of four organizations and agencies in the state that received funding. The others are Cerebral Palsy Association of Middlesex County ($240,000), Camden Housing Authority ($240,000), and the Rahway Housing Authority ($238,000), officials said.

"These grants help families on their way to economic independence," HUD Deputy Regional Director JoAnna Aniello said in a statement. "Whether it's taking classes to get a better job or learning what it takes to become a homeowner, these grants help public housing residents achieve their personal and career goals."

The funding, part of $27,960,860 awarded nationally last week, is provided through HUD's Resident Opportunities and Self-Sufficiency program.

The funding is also used to provide supportive services such as childcare and transportation to help families take advantage of training and employment opportunities.
