The interior offices are a mess, with garbage strewn about and the remnants of someone's lunch still sitting on a desk. There is no air conditioning, so inside it was stifling hot this morning. There is no elevator. An exterior, cage-covered staircase leads you from the second to the third floors. In the next six months, though, the city plans to give the aging building a roughly $1 million face lift as its prepares to move its police headquarters there. The planned move, which will include the offices of the public safety director and police chief, is part of the city's efforts to create a visible presence in a often neglected neighborhood, Mayor Steve Fulop said today. also of note: Top police officials now work out of an office building in Journal Square, where they moved in July 2012 after the city sold its former headquarters on Erie Street. That lease expires next May. Fulop said today the move to Marion Gardens, located near the foot of Sip Avenue on the city's West Side, will create significant taxpayer savings. The new lease with the Jersey City Housing Authority, which owns the building, puts rental costs at $6 a square foot, versus more than $18 in Journal Square, Fulop said. Total rent at Marion Gardens will be $207,000 annually, versus $512,359.44 for police offices at the Journal Square building plus a warehouse for the Office of Emergency Management. Other city offices are housed in that building. The city also pays to rent parking spaces for employees who work at the Journal Square building, Public Safety Director James Shea noted today. At least 51 police employees will move to Marion Gardens, Shea said today.
