I can't believe that the cops of JC didn't organize themselves to cash in on off-duty work and make a grab for some of those grant funds ? Maybe they did !

Jersey City has been awarded one of 25 Local Aid grants as a part of the state's Safe Routes to School program, the Christie Administration announced today.

As a part of the program, the city will receive $300,000 to make improvements to school crossing safety improvements.

In total, the program awarded 35 grants totaling nearly $5.7 million throughout the state. The Safe Routes to Schools grants allow for sidewalk, intersection, crosswalk and other improvements to help children remain safe as they walk or ride bicycles to and from school.

"These grants are among hundreds distributed by this administration every year this administration every year to help local and county governments advance essential projects without burdening local property taxpayers," NJDOT Commissioner James Simpson said.

The Safe Routes to School grants are awarded on a competitive basis. The grans will be provided to the recipients as their projects advance.

In light of the recent Newtown, Conn. massacre and other school shootings, the Jersey City Police Department will be conducting a "comprehensive and thorough review" of school security plans in the city's private and public schools, officials have announced.

Beginning tomorrow, Capt. Charles Nierstedt, a 33-year-veteran of the department, will begin working with school officials to enhance safety in the schools, Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy and Police Chief Tom Comey said in a release.

Jersey City Board of Education President Sue Mack said this afternoon that she didn't know anything about these plans but would reach out of Superintendent of Schools Marcia Lyles to see if she had information about it.

Nierstedt is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City, and has experience and training in the city's Office of Emergency Management.

In addition to the public schools, any private educational institution that wants a security analysis of its facility can contact the police chief's office at (201) 547-5301.

This announcement comes on the heels of yesterday's large anti-gun rally in Lincoln Park, which was jointly organized by Healy and the North Jersey chapter of One Million Moms for Gun Control.

Similar events were held yesterday in Washington, DC, Boston, and Chicago.

It must be an election year. Dickinson, Lincoln, Snyder & Ferris have been centers of student violence for years. Now in light of the horror that was Newtown, Mayor Heely gets concerned for our children's safety.

Barkeep! Another round!!!!
