JERSEY CITY -- One person is dead and another injured after gunfire erupted Sunday afternoon, police sources say.

The shooting happened on Forrest Street between Bergen Avenue and Martin Luther King Drive at about 1:30 p.m.

The first victim, a man believed to be in his 20s, was shot multiple times and was immediately brought to Jersey City Medical Center where he died a short time later, multiple sources tell The Jersey Journal.

A second victim was found a short time later and was brought to the hospital with a non life threatening injury and is in stable condition, sources said.

Crowds of people gathered near the Martin Luther King Driver intersection watching as police began their investigation.

The Rev. Herbert Daughtry was finishing Sunday services at the House of The Lord Church when the congregation heard about a dozen shots fired in the neighborhood.

At least 12 evidence markers scattered along the street as police appear to have been focusing their investigation near 322 Forrest St.

"Tell me this isn't another shooting," one man yelled as he drove by the city's Emergency Service Unit. Public Safety Direct Jim Shea was also seen arriving to the investigation.

Sources say there was some kind of fight involved in the shooting, possibly over drugs.

This will be the 14th homicide in Jersey City this year and the 17th in Hudson County. The shooting is on the same block where Ahmin Colclough was gunned down in September.

Additional information was not immediately available.
