Broken gas pipe being repaired near Holland Tunnel in Jersey City: officials

January 24, 2012, 11:31 AM
By Summer Dawn Hortillosa / The Jersey Journal

A gas line near the Holland Tunnel was broken by a construction crew this morning, forcing the temporary closure of the westbound tunnel traffic, officials said.

At 9:53 a.m., a crew doing excavating work near 14th Street and Washington Boulevard in Jersey City hit and broke a gas pipe, Jersey City Fire Director Armando Roman said.

Firefighters reported to the scene at 9:56 a.m., he said, adding that PSE&G arrived at 10:20 a.m. to repair the pipe.

During the incident, New Jersey-bound traffic from the Holland Tunnel was blocked, said freelance news photographer Joe Shine, who was on the scene. Traffic was reopened after PSE&G crews arrived and shut off the gas, he said.
