View Larger Map Jersey City police say dog is shot dead in front of owner Published: Friday, July 22, 2011, 3:00 AM By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal A pit bull was killed by a shotgun blast on a Jersey City street Wednesday night after an argument between the gunman and dog owner, officials said. At 10:40 p.m., officers responding to Ege and Bergen avenues found the dead dog with a shotgun wound to its side and a spent Remington 12-gauge shotgun shell on the sidewalk, officials said. Yesterday, the dog?s owner, a 30-year-old Virginia Avenue man, said that he had owned the golden brown dog Daddy since he was a puppy. Daddy was 4 or 5 years old, he said. The man told police he was with Daddy when he went to Ege to buy something to eat and encountered the gunman, reports said, adding that they had argued earlier in the day. The dog owner said he tied Daddy to a fence and the argument resumed, but the dog got loose and chased the gunman up the block before the owner could get him back under control, reports said. As the dog owner continued walking, the gunman walked off the porch of a residence, aimed the gun at Daddy and fired one round, killing him, reports said. The gunman then turned the shotgun on the owner but quickly lowered it and ran away, reports said, adding the dog was already dead. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Jersey City police tip line at (201) 547-JAIL.
