View Larger Map Cops: Comment about girlfriend leads to slashing Wednesday, May 11, 2011 A 41-year-old Jersey City man was arrested Saturday morning after allegedly using a broken bottle to slash a man who made a comment about his girlfriend, reports said. Calvin A. Payton, 41, of Oak Street, was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes and unlawful possession of a weapon, reports said. A 43-year-old man bleeding heavily from his left hand told police - who were called to the assault at Gifford and Bergen avenues at 8:26 a.m. - that he was defending himself after being slashed in the hand with a broken bottle, reports said. The man was swinging a hammer at Payton when police arrived, reports said. The victim told police that Payton punched him in the face after he complimented the suspect's girlfriend, reports said. After Payton punched him, the victim said, he followed his attacker in a car to Gifford and Bergen avenues and when he got out the car, Payton slashed a finger on his left hand him with a bottle, reports said. Police called for an ambulance, but the victim refused medical attention, saying he would go to the hospital himself, reports said. CHARLES HACK
