16-year-old charged in Jersey City shooting
Wednesday, April 27, 2011, 8:45 PM By Ron Zeitlinger - The Jersey Journal
A 16-year-old Jersey City boy has been charged with the shooting of a man on a Jersey City street last night, police said.
The McDougal Street resident was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest and other offenses, reports said.
A 20-year-old Jersey City man, Hassan Carlisle, was also arrested and police say he was given a gun by the boy and discarded it while being chased by cops. Carlisle was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, obstruction, resisting arrest and tampering with evidence.
A 21-year-old Whiton Street man was shot twice on Claremont Avenue at around 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, police said. He was treated for gunshot wounds to his left buttocks and left foot, Jersey City Medical Center spokesman Mark Rabson said.
Police initially reported that the man was shot in the back. Rabson said the victim was treated and released Tuesday night.
Police said they were tipped off to the alleged shooter by a man who flagged down cops from his car on Bergen Avenue, pointed to the boy and said "He just shot somebody, he has a gun!" reports said.
When police attempted to stop him, the boy pulled out what appeared to be a handgun and fled north on Bergen Avenue and then east on Kearney Avenue, cops said. The boy met up with Carlisle and they fled together back to Bergen Avenue before they split up, reports said.
Police caught Carlisle on Kearney Avenue, but not before he tossed the gun over a fence near the light rail tracks, reports said. The search for the gun was ongoing yesterday, police spokesman Stan Eason said.
Cops caught the accused shooter at Virginia Avenue near Bernius Court at 6:30 p.m. Because of his age, the boy was remanded to the juvenile detention center in Secaucus.
Police recovered a gun believed to be involved in the crime on Claremont Avenue, about five doors down from where they found the shooting victim.
