Jersey City police seek help in finding culprits in three Heights robberies in 10 minutes
Monday, November 22, 2010 By CHARLES HACK JOURNAL STAFF WRITER
Jersey City police are seeking the public's help in finding a pair of armed suspects they believe robbed two grocery stores and a mentally disabled man in the Heights within a 10-minute period on Nov. 11.
Police first responded to a grocery store robbery at 7:48 p.m. at a store on Central Avenue near Beacon Avenue where two suspects showed a handgun and stole more than $1,000, officials said. After leaving the store, the suspects robbed a necklace and a small amount of cash from a mentally disabled man, police spokesman Stan H. Eason said.
Police believe the same pair then robbed a Liberty Avenue grocery store.
In that robbery, video footage shows a man wearing a white hooded sweatshirt walk behind the counter, and then punch the employee in the face and slam the victim's head on a wall.
The robber then rifled through the cash register and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Eason said police believe the suspects left that robbery in a dark green SUV, possibly a Ford Explorer made between 1996 and 1998.
One of the suspects is described as 6-feet tall, medium build with braided hair and light complexion. The other suspect is described as 5-feet, 9-inches tall, with a thin build, a mustache, and curly hair, police said.
Police urge anyone with information about these suspects to call either the police tip line at (201) 547-JAIL or the North Precinct detective Bureau at (201) 547-5353.
