Shots rang out at 43 Thorne St. in Jersey City at 3:44 a.m. yesterday morning, police said.
But when cops reached the house, they didn't find any residents with guns or anyone harmed.
Police did however find a starter pistol - one of those guns fired to start track meets - in an alleyway; and four red 12-gauge shotgun shells in an open glove box of a Ford Expedition that was parked in front of the building with its windows down, reports said.
The starter pistol and the shells were placed in evidence, but the shots several residents reported as coming from the second floor remained a mystery, reports said.Anyone with information is asked to call (201) 547-JAIL.
