Jersey City cops say suspected heroin dealer puts up fight, but two plainclothes cops take him
Thursday, February 25, 2010 By GEM JEFFERSON JOURNAL STAFF WRITER
Jersey City police arrested a suspected heroin dealer Tuesday, but he didn't go quietly, according to reports said.
Watching a Bergen Avenue building where residents said drugs were being sold, police observed a man later identified as Corey Fairly, 34, standing on the steps at about noon, reports said.
The man went back inside and emerged with what police took to be bundles of heroin, reports said.
Showing their badges, two plainclothes officers tried to stop Fairly at the corner of Wegman Parkway and Martin Luther King Drive, but Fairly pushed the cops and started to fight, reports said.
The struggle tumbled into a grocery store, where Fairly punched an officer in the face, causing a cut and bleeding from his nose, and kicked the other officer in the knee, reports said.
But using his baton, a cop brought Fairly to the ground and the officers were able to cuff him, reports said.
During the fight, Fairly dropped two bundles of suspected heroin, both having a "TRIPLE CROWN" logo, reports said.
He was charged with possession of drugs with intent to distribute, aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, possession of illegal drugs, and possession of drugs near school property.
Fairly was taken to Jersey City Medical Center for pain in his legs and face, while the two officers chose to seek medical attention on their own.
