Boy leaps from window to escape knife-wielding dad
Monday, November 23, 2009 By CHARLES HACK JOURNAL STAFF WRITER
A 15-year-old boy leaped from his second-floor bedroom window yesterday to escape his knife-wielding father, police reports said.
The 41-year-old father, of Grant Avenue, was charged with aggravated assault and simple assault, reports said.
The boy was taken to a local area hospital.
Police were called to the Van Nostrand Avenue home shortly after 2 a.m. on the report of a dispute between the father and his son, reports said.
The teenager, his aunt and cousin told police that the boy came out of his room when he heard his father - who doesn't live there - arguing and punching his cousin, who is also 15, reports said.
The boy told his aunt - who is the legal guardian of both children - who broke up the fight, but then his father turned on the boy, reports said.
The teen's father grabbed a knife from the kitchen and lunged after him. The boy fled into his room locking the door behind him and then fearing for his life jumped from the window, reports said.
The father was arrested at the scene.
The 15-year-old female cousin refused medical treatment, reports said.
