Cops: Jersey City felon with drugs couldn't outrun cops or escape keen nose of police dog Joker
by Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal Thursday February 26, 2009, 7:33 PM A Jersey City felon bailed from his car and took off running Wednesday night when cops approached with lights flashing. But police caught him after a chase and police dog Joker found plastic bags containing suspected crack cocaine along the route of his run, officials said. Edwin Maldonado, 27, of Baldwin Avenue at Fleet Street, was arrested at about 7:35 p.m. on Waverly Street and charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, eluding police and numerous drug offenses, reports said. Officers working on a tip spotted Maldonado parked at a fire hydrant at Prospect Street and Baldwin Avenue, reports said. But when they pulled up with the flashing lights, he slammed his car into reverse and backed up recklessly before jumping out, reports said. Maldonado ditched his jacket in an alley and two officers chased him through backyards and over fences until they grabbed him on Waverly where he punched and kicked at the cops before they cuffed him, reports said. Police found a bag of suspected cocaine in Maldonado's jacket and Joker, who was brought to the scene by another officer, found a bag containing 29 more nearby, reports said. Maldonado was in prison from Jan. 20, 2006 to Nov. 16, 2007 on conviction for eluding police, a drug offense, and two counts of aggravated assault, state corrections officials said.
