View Larger Map Cops: Homeless man breaks into Jersey City home Published: Monday, June 06, 2011, 3:00 AM By Charles Hack/The Jersey Journal JERSEY CITY -- A trail of blood led police to a homeless man they say broke into a Jersey City home across the alley from where he was squatting, according to reports. A 40-year-old woman told police Saturday night that at around 6:30 p.m., a burglar had broken into her apartment on Van Reypen Street near Academy Street while her daughters, 5 and 17 years old, were home alone, reports said. Startled by the girls? presence, the burglar fled through the window in the 5-year-old?s bedroom that he had broken to enter the house in the first place, the woman said, according to reports. The burglar left a trail of blood droplets outside the window and near a Comcast converter box, which he had stolen, reports said. Police followed the trail of blood across an alleyway to a basement apartment and found Wilson Mercado, 49, of Jersey City, sleeping on a mattress. Police noticed Mercado had a gash on the middle finger of his right hand and there was blood on his T-shirt, reports said. Police also found a blood-smeared Comcast converter box lying on the floor, reports said, adding that Mercado was charged with burglary.
