View Larger Map Anti-gay graffiti on apartment door and hallway walls prompt 3 Jersey City roommates to file complaint with police Wednesday, April 20, 2011 Roommates at a building on Gray Street in Jersey City filed a complaint with police Monday after finding a spray-painted image of a penis on their apartment door and the word "gay" scrawled on the wall near the door, according to reports. The crime has been classified as a bias incident and criminal mischief, according to reports. A 30-year-old resident at the building, who said he is gay, told police he noticed the images when he was leaving his apartment at 5:15 p.m., reports said. Besides the word and the drawing on the apartment door, the man told police the peep hole on the door was spray-painted over and that when he went downstairs he found another crude image of a penis had been drawn on the hallway wall, according to reports. The victim surmised the offensive spray-painting must have taken place between 1 p.m., when he arrived home, and 5:15, when he was leaving, reports said. Two other roommates said they were in the apartment during that time and didn't hear anything. The 30-year-old resident said he and his roommates moved into the building, which is off Montgomery Street, two months ago and haven't had any issues or disputes with anyone in the area, reports said. Two of the roommates had previously told the landlord that the main entrance to the building was typically left open, reports said. When Jersey Journal reporters visited the property yesterday, the outside doors were locked. ADAM HOLSTEN
