Man with gun on train arrested

A man with a handgun riding the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail train was arrested Saturday near Exchange Place in Jersey City, police said.

DaShawn Cousins, 18, of Ocean Avenue, Jersey City, was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of alcohol under age, resisting arrest and destroying evidence.

A NJ Transit spokesman didn't know yesterday if the gun was loaded.

Port Authority police received a call of someone with marijuana on the light rail train Saturday around 10:38 p.m. The man, later identified as Cousins, fled as soon as the cops arrived, reports said. During a foot chase he threw the handgun he was carrying to the ground, police said.

Police arrested the man at Hudson and Grand streets, according to a spokesman for the Jersey City Police Department, whose officers assisted in the arrest. The handgun was also retrieved nearby, police said.
